The “Thessaloniki International lgbt-q Film Festival” was born in 1999 (initially named as «LGBTI Film Panorama and Parallel Events»), on initiative of the association «Sympraxi / Co-operation Against Homophobia» and in collaboration with the «International Thessaloniki Film Festival». It takes place each year in OLYMPION Cinema Center, in the historical part of Thessaloniki / Greece (Aristotle Sq.).
Today, the Festival is organized by the society “SYMPRAXI – Partnership for Gender Issues” and the «International Thessaloniki Film Festival» as part of the cultural events of SYMPRAXI, “Cultural Panorama for the Gender”. We collaborate with:
the Pedagogic Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki,
the Department of Film Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki,
the German Institute GOETHE in Thessaloniki (one of the first supporters of the festival),
the French Institute of Thessaloniki and the Lesbian Group of Thessaloniki.
Our festival is supported by the General Consulate of France in Thessaloniki and
TV5Monde.
The “Thessaloniki International LGBT-Q Film Festival” and its parallel events wish to deal with:
- the interests,
- needs and
- desires
of gay – lesbian - bisexual – intersexual citizens (women and men), as well as
- the difficulties
these people have to deal with because of a dominant homophobic feeling and an ideological and implemented social (and individually embodied) hostility. In order to achieve these objects, the “Thessaloniki Cultural Panorama for the Gender” and the Film Festival supports the cultural expression, the social dialogue and the development of citizen’s depictions.
The «Thessaloniki International LGBT-Q Film Festival» includes:
- long and short films (fiction & documentaries) screenings of «Thessaloniki International LGBT-Q Film Festival”,
- fine art events (art as well as photography exhibitions),
- discussions
No one of the members and friends of the nonprofit organization SYMPRAXI is receiving any financial support for his/ her work referring the “Thessaloniki International LGBT-Q Film Festival”. Also scientists, painters and photographers participating in our events don’t receive any financial support. Our festival is an activity of volunteers without any profit. The tickets’ prise is as low as possible (lower than in cinemas) and covers only a part of the expenses.
